Mr Timothy is a Consultant Spinal Neurosurgeon who operates privately and solely at the Nuffeld Hospital in Leeds. Born and brought up in Leeds, Jake trained at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and qualifed as a doctor in 1991 returning to Leeds in 1996 to pursue his neurosurgical career. He is a caring and professional doctor of international repute and guides his patients through clinic explaining every step of their treatment in an understanding and friendly manner. Working alongside him is an experienced team including an advance spinal nurse practitioner, a pain specialist, an anaesthetist, physiotherapists, holistic practitioners and radiologists.
Mr Timothy operates privately under his company name Spine Sense Ltd and operates solely at the Nuffield Hospital, Leeds. He has been a consultant neurosurgeon at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust for over 14 years, prior to this worked at other private hospitals in the region. He has chosen to operate exclusively at Nuffield Leeds because of the investment and technology provided by the hospital which enables Mr Timothy to perform complex reconstructions of the spine with confidence.
Mr Timothy has been a full time Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust since 2003. He trained at Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, London before working in Neurosurgery at King’s Hospital, London. On completing his neurosurgical training he obtained his MD thesis. Mr Timothy was the first neurosurgeon to become the National Spinal Fellow in Leeds (2002). He pioneered and introduced many new techniques to the Yorkshire region including interspinous distractors, artificial disc replacements, minimally invasive surgery, extreme lateral approaches and was awarded a clinical excellence in service delivery for the vertebroplasty service set up. Mr Timothy also runs a multidisciplinary clinic with a pain specialist and spinal physiotherapists.

Mr Timothy has had several national and international positions over the years within AO Spine, European Association of Neurosurgeons and the World Federation of Neurosurgeons. He is a member of various spinal organisations
Trainee representative for the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) and UK training representative for the World Federation of Neurosurgeons. He won several prestigious awards such as the Young Inventors Award in 2001 in Austrailia and the Hydrocephalus Association award in New York. After his consultancy, Jake was an early pioneer of spinal surgical techniques, and introduced various procedures to the Yorkshire region, such as interspinous process distractor, cervical and lumbar arthroplasty, minimally invasive techniques, anterior lumbar interbody fusions (ALIF), extreme lateral interbody fusions (XLIF) and was awarded the Healthcare Award for Service Delivery at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust for the introduction of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty techniques to treat fractures of the vertebra due to cancer
Mr Timothy has published over 60 peer reviewed publications including the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine and has written numerous chapters in surgical textbooks and was given the position of Honorary Clinical Associate Professorship by the University of Leeds in 2014.
Research and Teaching
Mr Timothy is an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in the University of Leeds and has had many research grants awarded and over 50 scientific publications. He spends a lot of his time training junior doctors (recently Foundation Program Training Director) and spinal surgeons who have gone on to be consultant spinal surgeons around the UK. He also teaches on a Diploma in Clinical Education course. During his training he held several positions one being the British Neurosurgical Trainee representative for the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS) and UK training representative for the World Federation of Neurosurgeons.
Over the latter years he continues to learn and teach new techniques to his colleagues in Leeds and has developed spinal services in other NHS trusts in the UK such as Oxford and Hull. He spends a lot of his time teaching on dedicated spinal courses both in the UK and abroad. He has organised many courses in Leeds and regularly has surgeons from other countries to observe complex surgical techniques. Prior to leaving the NHS, he has been a foundation program director for newly qualified doctors and mentor for some of his colleagues. He developed the spinal surgical courses for the European Association of Neurosurgeons as well as the Eurospine diploma courses.
